    Choosing an exhaust system

    An exhaust upgrade changes sound, airflow and often the look of the rear of your vehicle. Cat-back systems replace everything behind the catalytic converter, axle-back systems replace only the muffler section, and headers replace the exhaust manifolds at the engine.

    Sound is the most personal choice. Chambered mufflers tend to give a deeper, more aggressive tone, while straight-through designs flow more freely and are louder. If you drive long distances, look for a system described as mild or touring to avoid drone at highway speed.

    Material matters for long-term life. Stainless steel resists rust better than aluminized steel, which costs less and is fine in dry climates. Match the pipe diameter and the number of outlets to your engine and the look you want.

    What is the difference between cat-back and axle-back?

    A cat-back system replaces the pipes and muffler behind the catalytic converter. An axle-back replaces only the section behind the rear axle, so it is simpler and changes less.
