    Choosing cooling parts

    The cooling system works as a loop: the water pump moves coolant, the thermostat controls the temperature, the radiator sheds heat and the fan pulls air through. When one part fails the others work harder, so look at the whole loop when you chase an overheating problem.

    A larger or higher-capacity radiator helps with towing, hot climates, track days and engines that make more power than stock. An aluminum core is lighter and sheds heat well, and electric fans add flow at low speed and free up power otherwise used to turn a belt-driven fan.

    Replace worn hoses and clamps while the system is open, and refill with the coolant type your vehicle calls for. Do not mix coolant types.

    Is an aluminum radiator better than the factory one?

    For most upgrades, yes. Aluminum cores generally carry more coolant and shed heat well. The best choice depends on the vehicle and how you use it, such as towing or racing.
