    Choosing fasteners and hardware

    Fasteners hold the engine and chassis together, so the grade and the torque value matter. High-strength studs and bolts hold a joint tighter than stock hardware, which helps with high boost, high compression or heavy loads. Follow the maker instructions for torque, thread lubricant and tightening sequence.

    Match the thread size, length and grip to the job. Head studs, main studs and rod bolts are specific to the engine family, while bushings, spacers and general hardware come in sets or by size. Always replace one-time-use fasteners when the instructions call for it.

    Polyurethane bushings are firmer than rubber and give a more direct feel, which suits performance driving, although they can pass on more noise and vibration.

    Are head studs better than head bolts?

    Studs give a more even clamping load and are the usual upgrade on high-power or boosted engines. Many street engines are fine with new bolts. Our blog has a full comparison.
