    Choosing fittings and hoses

    Fluid lines are sized by AN numbers: -6, -8 and -10 are common for fuel and oil. The AN number is also the thread, so a -8 hose end needs a -8 fitting. Mixing AN fittings with NPT or metric threads needs an adapter, and tapered pipe threads should not be reused.

    Match the hose to the fluid. Rubber and PTFE-lined stainless braided hose handle fuel, oil and coolant, and each has its own rated temperature and pressure. Use fittings made for the hose type you buy, and pressure test the system before you run the engine.

    Keep hoses away from heat and sharp edges, and use clamps or mounts so lines do not rub against moving parts.

    What does AN mean on a fitting?

    AN stands for Army-Navy and is a standard for thread and size. The number after AN is the size in sixteenths of an inch, so -8 is 1/2 inch.
