    Choosing marine pumps and plumbing

A bilge pump has to match the boat. Pump capacity is rated in gallons per hour, but the figure is measured with no lift, so choose a pump with more capacity than you think you need. Add a float switch or an automatic pump if you want the bilge to clear itself while the boat is unattended.

Engine bays on gasoline boats need ventilation. A blower removes fuel vapor before you start the engine, and its hose size and air flow rating need to match the duct run. Check the voltage (12 V or 24 V) and the hose connection size before you order.

For plumbing, match the hose inner diameter to the fitting and use marine-rated hose and clamps. Stainless steel hardware lasts longer in salt water.

Brands we carry in this category include Johnson Pump, Mishimoto, Sea Dog, Taylor Made and Taco Metals.

    Common questions

What size bilge pump do I need?

Choose by the size of the boat and how much water it could take on, not by the lowest price. A larger pump or a second pump is a common safety choice. If you are unsure, contact us with the boat length and type.

How do I check a part will work on my boat?

Check the size, thread, connector or mounting details in the product title and description against what you have, and look at the photos. If you are unsure, contact our support team and we will help you check before you order.

What if the part does not fit?

Returns are accepted within 60 days, unused and in the original packaging, and return shipping is free. See Shipping & Returns for the details.
