A car battery usually lasts about three to five years, and heat, short trips and corrosion shorten that. The good news is that a few small habits can add a year or more. This guide covers what to check, how to test the battery yourself and when to replace it.
Why batteries wear out
A lead-acid battery loses capacity every time it is deeply discharged, and it loses it faster in hot weather. Short trips are hard on a battery because the alternator never gets time to refill what the starter used. Vibration from a loose hold-down and corroded terminals add to the wear. Cold weather does not damage a healthy battery, but it exposes a weak one: cold thickens the oil and cuts the battery's output at the same time.
Habits that help
- Keep the terminals clean. A white or blue-green crust on the terminals adds resistance. Disconnect the negative cable first, scrub the posts and clamps with a wire brush and a mix of baking soda and water, rinse, dry and reconnect the negative cable last.
- Secure the battery. A battery that can move in its tray is damaged by vibration. Tighten the hold-down bracket until the battery does not shift by hand.
- Drive it long enough. A drive of 20 to 30 minutes now and then lets the alternator recharge the battery. If the car sits for weeks, use a battery maintainer.
- Turn things off. Interior lights, a radio running with the engine off and a phone charger left plugged in all draw current.
- Keep it cool. Heat accelerates wear. A heat shield or a cooler parking spot helps in hot climates.
How to test your battery
A basic multimeter set to DC volts is enough. With the engine off and the car rested for a few hours, a healthy battery reads about 12.6 volts. At 12.2 volts it is roughly half charged, and below 12.0 volts it is discharged. With the engine running, the reading at the battery should be about 13.7 to 14.7 volts, which shows the alternator is charging. Most auto parts stores will also load-test a battery for free, which is a better test than voltage alone.
Signs it is time to replace it
- The engine cranks slowly, especially on cold mornings.
- Headlights dim at idle or when you start the car.
- The battery warning light comes on, or the battery case is swollen or leaking.
- The battery is more than four or five years old. The date code is on a sticker or stamped on the case.
When you replace a battery, match the group size, the cold cranking amps (CCA) and the terminal layout to your vehicle. Never go below the CCA rating in your owner's manual.
