Injen vs aFe Power Cold Air Intakes: Which Is Better?

Posted by Agile Auto Parts on Oct 25th 2026

Injen and aFe Power both sell cold air intakes for a long list of cars, trucks and SUVs, and both offer sealed-airbox kits as well as open-element ones. So the question is rarely "which brand" and more often "which design and which filter". This guide compares Injen's SP, Evolution and PF lines with aFe's Momentum GT, Magnum FORCE and Pro DRY S / Pro 5R filters, so you can match a kit to how you drive.

The short answer

If you want a sealed airbox and a tidy engine bay, compare Injen Evolution with aFe Momentum GT for your vehicle. If you want an open filter and more intake sound, compare Injen SP or PF with aFe Magnum FORCE. Either brand can be the right choice, so fitment decides.

Sealed airbox: Evolution vs Momentum GT

Both brands solve the same problem the same way: a closed housing that keeps engine-bay heat away from the filter and pulls air from the factory inlet area. Injen describes its Evolution kits as a one-piece sealed roto-molded polyethylene housing with a twist-lock filter mount and a clear inspection badge. aFe describes Momentum GT as a one-piece sealed housing in XLPE with a sight window. Both are meant to bolt into factory mounting points, and both let you look at the filter without taking the kit apart.

The trade-off with any sealed box is filter size. The housing has to fit the space, so the filter is often smaller than the one on an open kit. In return you get the cleaner look and more protection from hot air and splashes. Examples in our store include the Injen Evolution for the Toyota Tacoma and the aFe Momentum GT for Ford EcoBoost V6 trucks.

Open element: SP and PF vs Magnum FORCE

Open-element kits put an exposed filter in the engine bay, usually inside a heat shield. Injen's SP kits use aluminum tubing (the pages we checked list 6061-T6 aluminum, mandrel-bent on some) and come in polished or black finishes. The PF line is sold with either a dry or an oiled filter depending on the kit. aFe describes the Magnum FORCE Stage-2 as its flagship open-element intake: an oversized filter on a larger-diameter tube with a heat shield.

Open kits are usually simpler to install and the filter is easy to reach. They also let in more intake sound, which is the point for many buyers. The cost is that the filter sits closer to engine heat and water splash, so heat shield fit and filter location matter. Look at the Injen SP1123P for the BMW 230i, 330i and 430i or the aFe Magnum FORCE Stage-2 for the Dodge Challenger and Charger to see the two styles side by side. Some Magnum FORCE listings are enclosed variants, so confirm the style on the page for your vehicle.

Filter media and upkeep

Injen's Evolution and most SP and PF kits ship with its SuperNano-Web dry filter, which is serviceable, and some kits are also available with an 8-layer oiled cotton gauze filter. aFe offers Pro DRY S, an oil-free synthetic media, and Pro 5R, a five-layer oiled cotton gauze media. Some Magnum FORCE kits also offer Pro GUARD 7 for dusty, off-road use.

The practical point is the same for both brands: a dry filter is the lowest-effort option, because you clean it and never oil it. An oiled filter is washable too, but it needs the right amount of oil after cleaning, because too much can reach the mass airflow sensor. Our guide on K&N vs aFe Power cold air intakes covers filter basics, and the steps to clean an aFe filter apply to the oiled type.

Gains, claims and what to expect

Both brands publish horsepower and torque figures for many kits, and those numbers are measured on specific vehicles under their own test conditions. They are not promises for your car. A bolt-on intake alone usually changes throttle response and sound more than it changes power, and gains vary by engine. Turbocharged and diesel engines often respond differently from naturally aspirated ones. Treat any single number with caution and use it only to compare kits made for the same vehicle. Intakes work best alongside other changes, as we describe in top aftermarket upgrades for horsepower.

Emissions legality (CARB)

Legal status depends on the exact part number, not the brand. Injen lists a CARB Executive Order number on some of its pages, and states on others that the kit is not currently CARB exempt and cannot be sold for use on California-registered vehicles. aFe also lets you search by CARB EO number. Before you order, check the specific kit page, confirm the Executive Order covers your model year, and ask us if you are unsure. That applies in California and in other states that follow CARB rules.

How to choose

  • Start with your vehicle. Pick the kit made for your year, engine and trim. Brand comes second.
  • Want a clean, closed look? Choose a sealed kit: Injen Evolution or aFe Momentum GT.
  • Want more sound and an easy-to-reach filter? Look at open kits: Injen SP or PF, or aFe Magnum FORCE.
  • Hate maintenance? Choose a dry filter: SuperNano-Web or Pro DRY S.
  • Drive in California or a CARB state? Choose a kit with a CARB EO that covers your model year.
  • Check what is in the box. Heat shield, couplers and hardware vary by kit. You can also browse the Injen air and fuel parts page.

Common questions

Is Injen better than aFe Power?

Neither is better for every vehicle. Both make sealed and open designs with dry or oiled filters. Choose the kit made for your engine, then pick the design and filter that fit how you drive and how much upkeep you want.

Is a sealed airbox better than an open intake?

It depends. A sealed box shields the filter from engine heat and water and looks cleaner. An open kit is simpler, easier to inspect and louder. Look at the kit for your car rather than assuming one style is better.

Will a cold air intake void my warranty?

Fitting an aftermarket part cannot automatically void a vehicle warranty, but a maker may deny a claim if it can show the part caused the failure. Read your warranty terms and the intake maker's guidance.

Are these intakes legal in California?

Only if the specific part has a CARB Executive Order that covers your vehicle. Some Injen kits are listed as not CARB exempt. Check the kit page and the EO before ordering.
