KYB and Bilstein both build shocks and struts that go well beyond the cheapest parts-store options, but they approach the job differently. KYB is a major original-equipment supplier whose aftermarket lines are built around restoring or modestly improving the ride you already have. Bilstein is best known for monotube performance dampers. If you are choosing between them for a daily driver, this guide covers where each one fits.
The short answer
| KYB | Bilstein | |
|---|---|---|
| OE replacement line | Excel-G (gas-charged twin-tube) | B4 |
| Step-up lines | Gas-a-Just and MonoMax (monotube), AGX (adjustable) | B6 (performance, stock height), B8 (lowered or lifted) |
| Complete strut assemblies | Strut-Plus, with spring and mount pre-assembled | Strut assemblies for many vehicles; check the exact part |
| Ride goal | Factory feel, or slightly firmer | B4 matches factory; B6 and B8 are firmer and more controlled |
| Typical buyer | Daily driver that needs to ride like new again | Driver who wants sharper control, towing or hauling stability |
| Cost level | Generally lower, especially Excel-G | Generally higher, especially B6 and B8 |
If you just want the car to feel the way it did when new, KYB Excel-G is built for that. If you want a noticeably firmer, more controlled ride and will accept the extra cost, Bilstein B6 is the usual step up. Bilstein B4 is the closer match to Excel-G.
OE replacement: Excel-G vs B4
These are the two lines most daily drivers will compare. KYB describes Excel-G as a line that restores original handling and control, and trade sources describe it as a gas-charged twin-tube design. Bilstein says its B4 is built to match the original shock's valving profile, ride height and fit, so the car keeps its factory behavior. Depending on the vehicle, a B4 may be a monotube or a twin-tube design, which is one reason to match the exact part number to your car. Neither line is meant to change how the vehicle drives. Both exist so a worn-out shock or strut goes back to factory performance. For a typical commuter, the decision usually comes down to what is listed for your vehicle and what you want to spend. Browse examples such as the KYB Excel-G front shock for the 2018-2020 Toyota Camry or the KYB Excel-G rear shocks for the Infiniti G35 and G37.
Stepping up from stock
Here the two brands diverge in how they name their lines. KYB offers Gas-a-Just, a gas-charged monotube line that trade sources say can serve as an OE replacement or a modest upgrade, with a little more stability and support than Excel-G. MonoMax is KYB's heavier-duty monotube for trucks and SUVs that haul, tow or plow, and it is sold as an upgrade rather than a like-for-like replacement. Bilstein's answer is the B6, a monotube with vehicle-specific valving meant to be paired with the stock-height spring, and for trucks and SUVs the B6 4600. Bilstein positions it as a performance upgrade over the original damper. You can see this in practice on listings like the Bilstein B6 rear shock for the 2011-2019 Ford Explorer and the KYB Gas-a-Just rear shocks for the 1984-87 Corvette.
Lowered or lifted vehicles
If you have changed the ride height, shock length matters. Bilstein's B8 is built for modified ride height: on cars it is meant for aftermarket lowering springs, and the truck and SUV B8 family (5100, 6112 and others) is designed for lifted or leveled vehicles. Our Bilstein B6 vs B8 guide goes deeper on that choice. KYB's lines are mostly aimed at stock-height setups, though it also offers AGX, a manually adjustable shock. If you are lowering or lifting, confirm the specific part is listed for that height rather than assuming.
Struts and complete assemblies
Many modern cars use struts, which are part of the suspension structure and are often replaced with the spring and top mount. KYB's Strut-Plus assemblies come pre-loaded with the correct spring, top mount and insulators, which saves spring-compressor work and gives a fresh mount at the same time. An example is the KYB Strut-Plus front assembly for the Toyota Tacoma. Bilstein also sells assemblies for some vehicles, but availability varies by application, so check your exact year, model and trim. Even when replacing only a cartridge or shock, it is worth looking at mounts, boots and bump stops, which wear along with the shock.
Ride feel, warranty and cost
Excel-G and B4 aim to ride like factory, so you should not expect a change. Step-up lines such as Bilstein B6 and KYB MonoMax feel firmer and tighter, and you may feel more of the road surface. That is the trade for control, so a comfort-first commuter may be happier on the OE-style lines. On warranty, KYB states a limited lifetime warranty for its shocks, struts and Strut-Plus units for the original purchaser while they own the vehicle. Bilstein's US warranty page lists a limited lifetime warranty for B4, B6 and B8 5100, with shorter terms for some other B8 lines. Always read the current terms. Relative cost: KYB OE-style lines are usually the more economical choice, and Bilstein performance lines usually cost more. How to choose
- Want it to ride like new? Choose KYB Excel-G or Bilstein B4 for your exact vehicle.
- Want more control on the stock spring? Look at Bilstein B6, or KYB Gas-a-Just for a gentler step up.
- Tow, haul or plow with a truck or SUV? KYB MonoMax or Bilstein B6 4600 are the lines to compare.
- Lowered or lifted? Use a line listed for that ride height, such as Bilstein B8.
- Replacing struts? Consider a complete assembly such as KYB Strut-Plus, and replace mounts at the same time.
- Replace in pairs. Shocks and struts should be changed in left and right pairs on the same axle.
Common questions
Is KYB as good as Bilstein?
They aim at different jobs. KYB Excel-G is a very good way to restore factory ride, while Bilstein B6 and B8 are performance-oriented. For a daily driver that you want to feel like new, KYB is often plenty.
Is Bilstein worth the extra money?
It is if you want firmer control, better load stability or a part for a lowered or lifted vehicle. If you only need to replace worn shocks and keep the factory feel, an OE-style line costs less and does the job.
Are KYB shocks twin-tube or monotube?
It depends on the line. Excel-G is described as gas-charged twin-tube, while Gas-a-Just and MonoMax are monotube designs. Check the product listing for your vehicle to confirm.
Should I replace shocks or struts in pairs?
Yes. Replacing both sides of an axle keeps damping balanced, so the car does not pull or lean differently side to side. Many owners replace all four at once if the car has high mileage.
